According to a theory the stones were brought to this place by a Scandinavian glacier. Another hypothesis tells us that these stone are the remains of ancient mountains, destroyed by the same glacier. Today the modern forms of these stones have appeared as a result of eolation during the course of the last twenty thousand years or so.
Why is this place known as the Stone Village?
One of the legends, from time immemorial, tells that there was once a rich village in this place. Some poor man from a nearby village came with a request for help, but nobody from the wealthy village would help him. At dawn on the following day all the buildings petrified.
Another legend tells that a pilgrim once visited this village and asked for some food. The rich men listened to his request, then handed him a package, but when the pilgrim left the village and opened his gift, he saw nothing but a stone lying there in his hands. The pilgrim damned the village and it inhabitants, all of which immediately turned to stones – the pilgrim was the Lord God Himself. On one of the stones the Lord God had left his tracks in the ukrainian Stone Village.
